Environment and Sustainability

Mission:

Improve the care for the environment and promote the sustainable use of resources within ESGO and the field of gynecologic oncology.

Overview:

This working group is focused on embedding sustainability into the heart of ESGO’s operations, events, and broader professional practices. The aim is to encourage environmentally responsible choices across all activities in gynecologic oncology and foster a culture of sustainability within the ESGO community.

Current Activities:

  • Review Article  This forthcoming review explores the environmental impact of gynaecological oncology, focusing on the significant carbon footprint of healthcare services such as surgery, imaging, and anaesthesia. It outlines the key sustainability challenges within the specialty and presents evidence-based strategies to reduce environmental harm without compromising patient care.
  • Survey on Sustainability in Clinical Practice – This planned survey aims to explore attitudes, levels of commitment, expectations, and awareness regarding environmental sustainability in clinical practice. The insights gathered will help inform future initiatives and policies to support sustainable practices in gynaecological oncology.
  • Operational Protocols for ESGO Sustainability – A framework is currently being developed to provide recommendations for integrating sustainable practices into ESGO’s activities, including events and office operations. This framework aims to reduce ESGO’s environmental impact while maintaining professional standards and operational efficiency.
