The 2024 webinar series is intended to educate and equip participants to address and overcome challenges associated with the pervasive gender inequity that impacts doctors' lives. The series also fosters career development and wellbeing by facilitating leadership skills and life-work integration. All of these issues were reported as crucial to the women who responded in the ESGO membership survey. We intend to offer four more webinars in 2025.
Equal Chances is ESGO’s gender equality and inclusion initiative aimed at empowering female members. The program’s name specifically refers to the reality that women historically, and currently, often do not have equal opportunities in their career development due to discrimination, unconscious bias and the unbalanced nature of family and care responsibilities that falls upon women’s shoulders around the globe . ESGO seeks to be at the forefront of movements in medicine that advocate for women to obtain the skills, knowledge and training that will enable them to reach the same life and career goals that are available to their male counterparts.
Unconscious bias leads to inequitable treatment, such as when women are offered less pay, expected to share more administrative burdens, or are evaluated based on past accomplishments when men are evaluated based on future potential. How can we identify bias, measure bias, prevent bias and interrupt bias? This webinar will provide tools and strategies for identifying, preventing and addressing bias in the workplace. We will also explore how to deal across cultures with microaggressions – harmful behaviours that result from bias.
We will discuss different interpretations of sexual harassment and bullying. This webinar will help participants understand evidence-based practices in prevention, frequency, impact on work, misunderstandings, cultural differences and legal frameworks.
Hospitals and other organizations must provide more flexible working hours, child-care options and destigmatization of motherhood to ensure that women do not lose leadership opportunities and pay equality. Women also must learn how to communicate their needs so that they don’t feel they must choose between family and career. This webinar will address both of the structural and personal obstacles to work-life integration and offer tested means of improving the balance and reducing stress.
Developing the skills you need and overcoming the obstacles to the training and opportunities that matter. Expert panel. According to research, men perform more operations than women and get more opportunities to learn specific techniques. Why is that and what can be done about it?
