ESGO Grants 

ESGO Research/Clinical Grant

Grants

ESGO sponsors 2 types of grants:

1. Clinical grant - clinical training during the entire period

2. Research grant - combining research with clinical training

Applications for both types of grants follow the same format. Funding will be granted for 6 to 12 months to applicants from one ESGO country to another. Grants will cover travel and living expenses and in certain exceptions exceptionally, depending on the host site, partially cover the salary. Bench fees cannot be requested. 

Purpose

The ESGO Research/Clinical Grant aims to further the dissemination of gynaecological oncological knowledge. It does so by funding travel and living expenses for a trainee to visit a renowned gynaecological oncological centre, to be trained clinically and/or scientifically in specific skills.

Dissemination of knowledge aims at increasing:

  • specific clinical and/or research skills of the trainee
  • co-operation between ESGO-members
  • acquaintance of the trainee with a network for co-operative studies

Requirements

The applicant must:

  1. Have completed subspecialty training in gynaecological oncology or in his/her last year of training at the intended time of the fellowship.

  2. Describe their specific background and experience in gynaecological oncology.

  3. Be able to communicate effectively with the host team, i.e. speak the language of the home country in case of clinical training.

  4. Obtain a letter of agreement from his/her academic institution, hospital, or employer, allowing the required and requested period of absence.

  5. Select a host institution preferably from the list of ESGO-EBCOG accredited centres.

  6. Contact the responsible physician from the selected host institution for submitting and approving of a training programme. The host institute must provide a letter stating their willingness to host the applicant (see Application Process).

  7. Explain what long term accomplishments will be expected as a result of participation in this ESGO Research/Clinical Grant programme.

  8. Applicants for a research fellowship should, in addition, submit a protocol for the proposed study to be performed during the time of clinical training.

  9. Provide his/her own laptop computer in order to be able to complete a portfolio and the required data collection.

  10. Be an ESGO member in good standing.

If accepted, the applicant must:

  1. Provide a detailed description of travel and other requirements, such as Visa documentation, for the trip to the selected host site country. ESGO will not provide assistance in these arrangements.

  2. For a research grant, the applicant must complete the application/submission process provided by the ethics board (or equivalent) of the selected host site.  Applicant cannot undertake the research study unless such ethics approval has been obtained and the approval letter is submitted to the ESGO office.

Programme Duration

6 – 12 months 

Application Deadline

Applications submitted at least one month before a council meeting will be reviewed at the next council meeting.

Amount of Funding

A maximum of €20,000 (depending on the programme submitted) will be provided to the approved applicant. This ammount funds travel and living expenses for the approved period. The grant is not intended to (fully) cover salary costs. No additional funding will be available through ESGO and any additional funding required, will be obtained by the applicant, or applicant’s home institution. The applicant will be responsible for all health care costs and/or any costs entailed with living away from their home country, other than those stated in this application.

Travel Documents/Visas

The applicant is responsible for obtaining travel documents, visas, or any other documentation required for their entry/stay in the host country. ESGO will not be responsible and will not provide support in obtaining such documents, but confirmation of grant application will be provided. 

Selection Criteria

ESGO's International Fellowship Subcommittee will select and fund two (2) international grantees per year. Criteria for selection will be based on multiple factors, including:

  • Availability of gynaecological oncology training programmes in the applicant’s home country
  • Quality and nature of described clinical programme and/or research project
  • The strength of the letter of recommendation from applicant’s programme or hospital director
  • Applicant’s prior academic record
