Dear Colleagues,

It is my pleasure to introduce to you the “Textbook of Gynaecological Oncology” containing articles from world famous authors in the field of gynaecological oncology, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and imaging specialties whilst offering discussions and reviews of multinational trials.

ESGO initiated the European Network of Young Gyn Oncologists (ENYGO) in order to offer a platform for the discussion, gathering and exchange of knowledge to all practitioners under the age of 40 and thus give all ENYGO members additional tools and opportunities to build their career whilst enabling information to disseminate.

The ENYGO booklet features excellent articles and does not claim to show definitive opinions, but is a fair attempt to offer its readers a source for information and further debate and discussion. ESGO recommends and supports this initiative and the ESGO Council would like to express their gratitude to the authors who offered their time and experience to the creation of this book.

ESGO is extremely grateful to Prof. Ali Ayhan and Dr. Murat Gultekin without whom this valuable product would not have been possible.

Thank you for your interest and we wish you a good lecture!

Gerald Gitsch

Past ESGO President

Dear Colleagues and Peers,

It is a great pleasure for me to see the ENYGO (European Network of Young Gynaecologic Oncologists) be realized as a junior club of ESGO.

Not only is ENYGO brand new, but it is also a very attractive initiative for us. As every one can imagine, oncology is a very difficult subspecialty in which to work and advance. That may be a reason that most Ob&Gyn trainees do not prefer to work on it.

With respect to our future, some of us need to take action and encourage the junior trainees who have the interest in gynaecologic oncology. This is the reason that we founded ENYGO; to allow people to meet with each other, to discuss individual problems, to try to discover and suggest solutions, to exchange ideas, and of course to increase the friendships among the juniors. We should never forget that these young trainees will be our future.

According to a famous Turkish proverb, we should keep in mind that ‘The art would die if the apprentice could not pass his expert’. Therefore, we have to fulfill the gap between the seniors and the juniors and to transfer our experiences to the upcoming juniors.

ENYGO has both social (sightseeing tours, cocktail and disco parties) and scientific activities (sunrise sessions, ENYGO sessions and lectures for different training systems) during the congresses. You can find the details of all ENYGO activities via the ESGO website.

We are working on future projects (collaborative trials, interim meetings and exchange programmes etc.) which we hope to implement within the next few years and present to the ESGO council. We also welcome any suggestions you may have concerning future projects for ENYGO.

I am very grateful particularly to Prof. Gitsch, Prof. Ayhan, Prof. Kesic and to all remaining ESGO council members who accepted our project and helped us to develop these activities. The ESGO council has been realizing the importance of training and organization of young people for many years. But, with this project, ENYGO became an official platform for us to express our needs and also to express our thanks to our seniors.

I would also like to thank all of our initial zone representatives from the different countries. They have all worked hard to promote ENYGO and to introduce ENYGO to the young people in their home countries. They are real heroes who have made great efforts for us to realize the ENYGO project.

This textbook is really admirable for many of its aspects. The authors are chosen from around the world and very famous in their fields. The book is composed of whole gynecologic oncology topics, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and imaging specialties. There are also discussions about the most debateful areas of gyn oncol and review of multinational trials. Also, future aspects of gynaecologic oncology and recent advances are reviewed.

As the representative of the European young gyn oncologists, I would like to thank all of the famous contributors of this textbook. This is a first in the literature where all of these highly referred scientists unite in a textbook. Of course this shows the humility of the contributing oncology seniors and we are very grateful to their efforts to create this textbook. I hope the book will be useful in our daily practice and be distributed to all juniors interested in gynaecologic oncology.

I would also like to emphasize the role of Florian Locatelli and Renata Brandnerova, who are handling almost all the secretariat activities of ESGO. They also worked hard towards the creation of ENYGO, organization of the activities, directive advises during the conflicts and designing our logo and website. On the other hand, I should also like to express my thanks and my gratitude to Nuran Karacan, Turgut Yozgatlı and Güneş Publishing personal for their unlimited energy to make up the time for publishing this textbook.

Finally, to my family and my friends who have themselves contributed to our textbook, each in their own way, perhaps the most apparent being the reduced time we could spend together during its publication. Thus to, dear wife Esra Gultekin, Polat Dursun, Nejat Ozgul, and Ayla Gultekin, I offer my personal thanks for your unwavering support.

With my deepest regards and with my greatest pleasures to work for ESGO&ENYGO.

Dr. Murat Gultekin
