How ESGO Shows Its Support
ESGO supports young oncologists in their careers by promoting educational activities for them that focus on practical aspects, research experiences and laboratory skills. By organising junior activities at its biennial congresses, for example, ESGO provides them with the opportunity to disseminate information in their home countries.
For this reason, ESGO decided to include a junior member on its executive council to represent young oncologists and express their needs. Dr. Boris Vranes is the current representative. During the ESGO16, 2009 congress, different junior activities were organised.

Junior Activities
Who is a young oncologist?
Anyone under 40 years old with an interest in gynecologic oncology is defined as a young gynecologic oncologist (be it a trainee or a specialist whatever the subspecialty e.g. gyn-oncologists, medical oncol or radiation oncol).
If you are a young oncologist and an ESGO member, you will have the chance to participate in the following junior activities:
- Young Researcher’s Session (YRS)
- Young Researcher’s Cocktail (YRC)
- Young Oncologist Sunrise (YOS)
- Young Oncologist Clinical Unit Visit (YOV)
- Young Researcher Handbook (YRH)
Young Researcher’s Session (YRS)
The Young Researcher’s Session is an educational event that provides young doctors with the chance to present and share their research and discuss their findings before final publication.
Why YRS?
- YRS allows young oncologists to present and discuss their researches in front of a group of people who are professionally interested and working in gynecologic oncology
- YRS will increase their self confidence and ability to impress
- YRS will mentally prepare young doctors for open discussions
- YRS will enable detection of inadequacies in a young doctor’s research before final publication
Who can attend YRS?
ESGO young oncologists and congress attendees who are under 40 years of age.
What is the format of YRS?
- One session during the ESGO congress
- 15-20 presentations within one session; including the discussion of results
- Best presentations will be awarded by the ESGO scientific committee
Young Researcher’s Cocktail (YRC)
The Young Researcher’s Cocktail is a social event that gives young doctors an opportunity to become acquainted.
Why YRC?
- YRC allows young oncologists ─ future gynecologic oncology leaders, to get know each other
- YRC will increase the scope of friendship between young doctors
Who can attend YRC?
ESGO young oncologists and congress attendees who are under 40 years of age.
What is the format of YRC?
Organized following the YRS.
Young Oncologist Sunrise
The Young Oncologist Sunrise is an educational event that gives young oncologists an opportunity to practice publishing high quality papers and presenting research findings. It also teaches them: how to obtain financial support for research projects; the basics of biostatistics on gynecologic oncology; practical aspects relative to career development skills; and how translational molecular laboratories work.
Why YOS?
- YOS enables the young oncologist to become well trained scientists in their careers as gynecologic oncologists
- YOS will enable the juniors to build more organized and well designed studies
Who can attend YOS?
ESGO young oncologists (members).
What is the format of YOS?
A one-hour session organized during the ESGO congress during the early hours of congressional day.
Young Oncologist Clinical Unit Visit (YOV)
YOV is an educational event that gives young oncologists a chance to visit different clinics around Europe.
Why YOV?
- YOV allows young oncologists to see different clinical applications all around Europe
- Juniors may have the chance to construct similar applications at hospitals in their countries
Who can attend YOV?
ESGO young oncologists (members).
What is the format of YOV?
A half-day tour to the most famous gynecologic oncology hospital in the country the ESGO congress occurs. The tour is organized by the local ENYGO members and local adult oncology committee.
Young Researcher Handbook (YRH)
A pocket booklet for junior members was distributed free of charge during the ESGO 16 congress. The authors were chosen from all over the world and are famous in their specialties.
The book covers the entire gamut of gynecologic oncology, including surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and imaging specialties.
There are also discussions on the most debatable areas of Gyn-oncologists and a review of multinational trials.
Also, future aspects of gynecologic oncology and recent advances are reviewed.
